JUST BROUGHT IT HOME?

A good start, in three steps.

  1. Give it its own pot to contain spreading roots.
  2. Choose a bright spot, with relief from extreme heat.
  3. Water if the surface is starting to dry.

Light & placement

Spearmint grows in sun or partial shade. A pot makes its spreading habit easier to manage. Outdoors, avoid letting roots escape through drainage holes into garden beds.

Water & drainage

Keep the root ball evenly moist while allowing surplus water to drain. Check frequently in warm weather; lush leaves can use water quickly.

Harvest & shape

Cut leafy tips above a leaf pair and leave enough growth for recovery. Regular harvesting keeps stems bushier. Wash leaves intended for food.

Growing well

Trim older, straggly growth and divide congested plants when actively growing. Feed container plants modestly. Winter dormancy outdoors may leave little visible growth; that is not necessarily failure.

When something looks wrong

Dry, crispy leaves call for a moisture and heat check. Orange-brown pustules can suggest rust; remove affected growth and consult the source before treating.

Check, water, drainCheck the soil against your plant’s care guide. Water the soil when needed. Let extra water drain and empty the saucer.01 · Check the soil02 · Water if needed03 · Drain completely
Your plant sets the pace. Check its moisture cue above, not a fixed weekly schedule.

Three things to avoid.

  • Planting it loose among slower-growing herbs.
  • Letting a small pot dry out completely.
  • Expecting indoor growth without enough light.
