JUST BROUGHT IT HOME?
A good start, in three steps.
- Find a sunny growing spot.
- Check drainage before watering.
- Allow space for spreading stems.
Light & placement
Give oregano plenty of sun. A bright outdoor container is often easier than a kitchen sill. Leaf flavor and growth vary between cultivars.
Water & drainage
Let the upper mix dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and drain; avoid persistent winter wetness.
Harvest & shape
Snip leafy shoot tips above a leaf pair. Regular small harvests encourage a branching shape. Leave enough foliage to keep the plant growing.
Growing well
Avoid heavy feeding. Trim straggly growth and divide congested plants when appropriate. Outdoor growth may slow or die back seasonally, depending on climate.
When something looks wrong
Long, weak shoots warrant a light check. Soft dark stems near wet soil suggest poor drainage. A tired woody plant can be renewed with fresh rooted shoots or divisions.
Three things to avoid.
- Overfeeding for rapid, soft growth.
- Leaving roots in standing water.
- Keeping it in a dim indoor corner.
